Hanoi
Base · 3 days
Vietnam’s most absorbing city for street food, coffee, temples and lived-in urban texture. Give it three nights; a token Old Quarter evening misses the point.
Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Trang An
Base · 2 days
Karsts, paddies and river caves make this the best easy countryside counterweight to Hanoi. Stay near Tam Coc for two nights rather than joining a rushed capital day tour.
Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba
Short stop · 1 day
The essential limestone-seascape stop, but only if you sleep on the water or on Cat Ba. Lan Ha Bay is the smarter choice for travelers who want kayaking and quieter horizons than the standard Ha Long convoy.
Sapa and the Northern Highlands
The accessible northern-mountains base for rice terraces and village walks. Skip Sapa town’s overbuilt center as much as possible and stay out among the valleys.
Ha Giang Loop
Base · 4 days
Vietnam’s most dramatic road-trip country: high passes, limestone valleys and long days that reward patience. It is better than Sapa for raw scenery, but not for inexperienced self-drivers.
Phong Nha–Ke Bang
Base · 3 days
The country’s strongest cave-and-jungle stop, with enough range for a simple river-cave day or a serious expedition. It is worth the awkward transfer only if you will stay long enough to use it.
Hue
Base · 1–2 days
The best place to understand imperial Vietnam, and one of the country’s best eating cities. Its citadel and tombs need two slow nights, not a rushed excursion from Da Nang.
Da Nang, Hoi An and the Central Coast
Base · 2–3 days
Vietnam’s easiest culture-and-beach cluster: use Da Nang for flights and broad beaches, then base near Hoi An or An Bang for food, cycling and the old port. Hoi An is beautiful, but sleep outside the busiest core.
Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon
Base · 2 days
Come for heat, energy, coffee, museums and eating rather than postcard beauty. It is the right southern city stop and the practical launch point for the Mekong or Phu Quoc.
Mekong Delta: Can Tho, Ben Tre and Chau Doc
Base · 1–2 days
A necessary change of pace from Vietnam’s headline cities and beaches: canals, orchards, river towns and Khmer-Cham influences. Stay overnight—generic Ho Chi Minh City day tours flatten the place into a prop.
Phu Quoc
Base · 2 days
The straightforward beach finish after a demanding north-to-south trip. Choose a smaller west- or north-coast stay if you want beach time rather than resort complexes and theme-park traffic.
North and Central first visit
8 daysHanoi (3 days) → Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Trang An (2 days) → Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba (1 day) → Da Nang, Hoi An and the Central Coast (2 days)
The sharpest short Vietnam route: Hanoi for city life, Tam Coc for inland karsts, one night on Lan Ha Bay, then fly south for Hoi An and An Bang. It deliberately skips Hue, the mountains and the South rather than turning eight days into a transfer marathon.

10 daysHanoi (3 days) → Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Trang An (2 days) → Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba (1 day) → Da Nang, Hoi An and the Central Coast (3 days) → Hue (1 day)
For first-timers who want the familiar North-and-Central spine without treating Hoi An as the whole of Central Vietnam. Fly Hanoi to Da Nang, then take the Hai Van Pass route to Hue; one night is a compromise, but it is still better than reducing Hue to a day trip.

14 daysHanoi (3 days) → Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Trang An (2 days) → Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba (1 day) → Da Nang, Hoi An and the Central Coast (3 days) → Hue (2 days) → Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon (2 days) → Mekong Delta: Can Tho, Ben Tre and Chau Doc (1 day)
The credible two-week north-to-south first trip. It uses domestic flights for the long jumps, gives Hue enough time to matter, and ends with an overnight in the Delta instead of a disposable Ho Chi Minh City bus tour.
Plan this routeDeep North-to-South with mountains, caves and a beach finish
24 daysHanoi (3 days) → Ha Giang Loop (4 days) → Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Trang An (2 days) → Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba (1 day) → Phong Nha–Ke Bang (3 days) → Hue (2 days) → Da Nang, Hoi An and the Central Coast (3 days) → Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon (2 days) → Mekong Delta: Can Tho, Ben Tre and Chau Doc (2 days) → Phu Quoc (2 days)
For travelers who actually have time to travel through Vietnam rather than merely collect airport codes. Ha Giang supplies the big mountain-road experience, Phong Nha earns its awkward logistics with three nights, and Phu Quoc is saved for a proper decompression finish. Use local drivers on the Ha Giang Loop unless you are an experienced rider.
