When to go

BestGoodFairPoorClosedCrowds (quiet → packed)June–September: best for waterfront walks, prairie, cycling and harbor activity. · Also: December–March: winter birding, snowy walks and dramatic lakefront photography; use the plowed east trail.

Time: Late afternoon into sunset for the skyline, harbor light and lake views. · Early morning for quieter running, birding and photography. · Midday in cool weather; it can be glaring, windy and nearly shadeless in summer.
Avoid: Postpone for lightning, dangerous wind, icy paths, extreme temperatures, poor air quality, or temporary fireworks-area closures.
