No vehicle-entry reservation is required for 2026; pay the entrance fee on arrival or show a qualifying pass. Half Dome requires a permit when cables are up: apply in the preseason lottery March 1–31, or enter the daily lottery two days before the hike between midnight and 4 p.m. Pacific Time. Permits are non-transferable; the permit holder or named alternate must carry photo ID and confirmation. Wilderness permits are required year-round for backpacking, overnight climbing, and other overnight wilderness use, but not ordinary day hikes; 60% of quotas are released by lottery 24 weeks ahead and 40% seven days ahead.
