Faro and the Ria Formosa
Base · 2 nights
Use Faro for the walled old town and, more importantly, boat days through the Ria Formosa to barrier islands such as Ilha Deserta. It is the sensible short-break or first/last-night base, not the region's strongest conventional beach town.
Lagos and Ponta da Piedade
Base · 3–4 nights
The best all-round western base: a proper old town, walkable beaches, good evening life and the headline cliffs at Ponta da Piedade, Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. It works unusually well even without a car.
Tavira, Santa Luzia and Ilha de Tavira
Base · 2–3 nights
Tavira is the east's most appealing base, pairing a graceful river town with ferry access to the long sands of Ilha de Tavira. Add Santa Luzia for serious octopus and quieter seafood meals.
Carvoeiro, Lagoa, Benagil and the limestone coast
Base · 2–3 nights
This is the concentrated postcard coast of ochre cliffs, small coves and the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Base in walkable Carvoeiro, but use a car for trailheads and Praia da Marinha; treat Benagil as weather-dependent rather than a guaranteed must-do.
Sagres, Vila do Bispo and the Costa Vicentina edge
Base · 2 nights
Come for exposed headlands, surf beaches, Cape St Vincent and sunsets that feel far removed from the resort belt. It needs a car and tolerance for wind, but rewards travelers who want walking and Atlantic scale over sheltered coves.
Olhão and Fuseta
Olhão has the Algarve's strongest market-and-harbor atmosphere, while Fuseta is a quieter gateway to shallow-water barrier-island beaches. Choose them for seafood and lagoon life, not polished old-town prettiness.
Portimão, Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo and Alvor
A useful central-west cluster with a huge urban beach at Praia da Rocha, better dinner atmosphere in Ferragudo and family-friendly boardwalks in Alvor. Stay in Ferragudo or Alvor if Portimão's high-rise frontage is not your style.
Vila Real de Santo António, Cacela Velha and the far east
The far east is for broad, easy sand and lower-key beach days rather than cliff drama. Cacela Velha delivers one of the Algarve's best lagoon-and-sandbar views; it is a poor base for the central coast or Sagres.
Loulé, Vilamoura and the Golden Triangle
Pair Loulé's market-town texture with Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo if golf, resort facilities and manicured beaches matter more than spontaneity. It is polished, expensive and car-dependent.
Albufeira, Galé and Guia
This is the practical high-energy resort base for broad dining choice, boat departures, beaches and nightlife; Galé is the calmer sleeping option. Go deliberately, not expecting the atmosphere of Tavira or Lagos, and detour to Guia for piri-piri chicken.
Silves and Monchique
Short stop · 1 night
The best inland break from the coast: Silves for its red-stone Moorish castle, Monchique for cork country, mountain walks and medronho. Treat them as a day trip or one- to two-night detour, not a replacement for a beach base.
Western Algarve first visit
4 nightsLagos and Ponta da Piedade (4 nights)
The right short Algarve trip if you want one base that does not feel like a compromise. Walk the Lagos coves and Ponta da Piedade, then use one car or tour day for the limestone coast and another for Sagres. Do not waste this short trip trying to reach Tavira.

7 nightsLagos and Ponta da Piedade (4 nights) → Tavira, Santa Luzia and Ilha de Tavira (3 nights)
This is the cleanest first-timer split: Lagos supplies dramatic coves, active days and western Algarve energy; Tavira slows the pace with a handsome town, Ilha de Tavira and seafood in Santa Luzia. Use the transfer day deliberately rather than pretending the region is tiny.

9 nightsFaro and the Ria Formosa (2 nights) → Lagos and Ponta da Piedade (3 nights) → Carvoeiro, Lagoa, Benagil and the limestone coast (2 nights) → Tavira, Santa Luzia and Ilha de Tavira (2 nights)
For drivers who want the Algarve's distinct coastlines rather than a resort stay. Start with a proper Ria Formosa island day, give Lagos time for its beaches and a Sagres outing, use Carvoeiro for the cliff trail and Benagil-area boat weather window, then finish quietly in Tavira near the airport.

A deeper route for travelers with a car who would rather walk, swim and linger than race between viewpoints. It gives the eastern barrier islands, central limestone coast and western headlands enough weather flexibility, then ends with an inland night for Silves, Monchique and a complete break from beach repetition.
