- Pace
- For a first visit, stay six to eight nights and use one central base—Victoria Island, Ikoyi or Lekki Phase 1—for tightly grouped outings. Treat Badagry as a full, early-start day trip, and make Ibeju-Lekki or Epe an overnight rather than a rushed excursion; move hotels only for a deliberate beach, lagoon or airport-night stay. Plan no more than one major outing, one meal destination and one evening commitment per day.
- When to go
- December to February is the easiest first-timer window: drier weather, stronger beach odds and Lagos at full social volume, with December delivering the biggest events—and the worst prices, traffic and booking pressure. March–April is brutally hot but still workable for food, art and nightlife; May–July and September–mid-October suit flexible, culture-led trips rather than ambitious road-and-beach schedules. Late October–November is the smart compromise before the December rush, while August can bring a shorter drier spell but is too variable to treat as guaranteed beach weather.

Lagos State is Nigeria’s commercial, cultural and entertainment engine: a vast, hot, traffic-heavy lagoon-and-Atlantic metropolis rather than a tidy city break. Come for contemporary Nigerian life at full volume—Afrobeats, Nollywood, fashion, galleries, nightlife, markets and serious Yoruba-coastal food—not for a monument checklist. Its rewards are real, but so are the structural frictions: humidity, long transfers, uneven infrastructure and the need to plan each day around traffic.
Known for
- Afrobeats, live music and December’s diaspora-fuelled nightlife
- Nollywood, fashion, contemporary art and creative culture
- Yoruba-coastal cooking, street food and lagoon/Atlantic seafood
- Lagos Island’s markets, port-city history and Afro-Brazilian heritage
- Lekki’s restaurant, beach-club and gallery scene
- Badagry’s transatlantic-slave-trade heritage sites
Where to go
1Base · 4–7 nights
Victoria Island and Oniru
The most practical first base for Lagos: strong hotels, serious restaurants, galleries, events and nightlife, with workable access to Ikoyi, Lagos Island and Lekki. It is expensive and traffic-heavy, but far less punishing logistically than trying to stitch the city together from the Mainland.

Explore Victoria Island and Oniru
2Ikoyi
Base · 1–2 days
A greener, quieter and more polished version of the Island, with waterfront views, high-end dining and calmer hotels. Choose it for comfort and a slower rhythm, not for being close to every attraction.

3Lagos Island
Short stop · 1 day
This is the old mercantile core around Marina, Onikan, Tinubu Square and Balogun: Freedom Park, museum stops, markets and the clearest sense of Lagos before its current entertainment boom. Go with a guide or local host if you want to tackle the market streets properly.

4Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate
Base · 1–6 days
The established western Lekki strip is where Lagos's gallery, restaurant, club and beach-club scene feels most current. It is the right base for Nike Art Gallery, Lekki Conservation Centre and late nights, provided you stay near the places you actually plan to use.

5Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki
Base · 1–3 nights
The eastward beach and resort corridor offers more room, quieter coastal scenery and a reason to leave central Lagos behind for a night or two. Treat it as an overnight escape, not a casual beach day from Victoria Island or the airport.

6Ikeja
Short stop · 1 night
The airport-side Mainland hub is useful for arrival or departure nights, business, and the New Afrika Shrine orbit. It is a practical stop rather than a substitute for staying on the Island if your trip is centered on galleries, restaurants and nightlife there.

7Yaba and Surulere
Short stop · 1 day
This Mainland creative belt trades polish for a more everyday view of Lagos: cafés, tech and university culture in Yaba, plus Surulere's deep music, film and Nollywood associations. It works best as a focused day or evening, not as a supposedly easy bridge to Island nightlife.

8Badagry
Base · 1–2 days
Lagos State's essential heritage excursion confronts the transatlantic slave trade through the Badagry Heritage Museum, Brazilian Barracoon, Vlekete Slave Market and Gberefu sites. Give it a full day, leave early and use a knowledgeable guide; this is not a quick photo stop.

9Epe
Base · 1–2 days
A lagoon-and-market town beyond the main Lekki development, Epe gives a quieter, fishing-and-waterfront view of the state. Pair it with an Ibeju-Lekki overnight if you want a genuine change of pace rather than a long, strained day trip.

Don't miss
1
Lekki Conservation Centre
This is Lagos’s most straightforward nature escape, known for its elevated canopy walkway and a welcome stretch of wetland and forest amid the city’s sprawl. Make it an early-day visit, especially if the walkway is a priority, then continue toward Lekki’s galleries or beach.
2
Nike Art Gallery
Nike Art Gallery is the most approachable introduction to the breadth of contemporary Nigerian art, craft and textile traditions in Lagos. The multistorey collection rewards browsing, and staff-led context makes it more useful than a quick photo stop.
3
National Museum Lagos
The National Museum provides essential historical context for Nigeria through archaeology, ethnography, royal art and traditional material culture. Its displays can feel uneven, but it remains the most useful museum stop for understanding the country beyond contemporary Lagos.
4
Kalakuta Republic Museum
Fela Kuti’s former home and shrine is a compact but potent stop for understanding Afrobeat, military-era dissent and Lagos’s radical cultural history. It is most rewarding for visitors who pair the objects and stories here with live music later in the city.
5
Badagry Heritage Museum
Badagry is Lagos State’s essential historical excursion, confronting the transatlantic slave trade through its museums, colonial-era buildings and nearby route-to-the-coast sites. The museum is a useful starting point, but allow time for a guide and the wider Badagry heritage circuit rather than treating it as an isolated collection.
Getting your bearings
Numbers match the places above; small dots are the headline sights.
The mental map
Think of Lagos in five practical bands: the Mainland (Ikeja, Yaba and Surulere, including the airport); old Lagos Island (Marina, Onikan and Balogun); the island belt of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Oniru; the long eastward Lekki–Ajah–Ibeju-Lekki corridor; and the outlying heritage/lagoon towns of Badagry in the west and Epe in the east. The Island and Mainland function like separate cities in traffic terms: an airport-to-Victoria Island run can take 45 minutes when clear or more than two hours at peak time.
When to go
December to February is the easiest first-timer window: drier weather, stronger beach odds and Lagos at full social volume, with December delivering the biggest events—and the worst prices, traffic and booking pressure.

Getting in
LOSMurtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja
The only sensible international gateway for Lagos State. It is on the Mainland: sleep in Ikeja only for a short airport stop or early departure, but allow a very large transfer buffer to Victoria Island, Ikoyi or Lekki.
Flights and transfers into IkejaABVNnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja
Useful when international fares or schedules into Abuja are better. Connect onward by domestic flight to Lagos rather than attempting the long road journey unless you have a specific reason to travel overland.
Flights and transfers into AbujaCOOCadjehoun Airport, Cotonou, Benin
A niche alternative for travelers already in Benin or concentrating on Badagry and the western edge of Lagos State. The land-border crossing is not a casual workaround: confirm Nigerian and Beninese visa, border-opening and onward-transport conditions in advance.

Questions worth settling
How many days should I spend in Lagos State on a first visit?
Plan six to eight nights. Lagos rewards a slow, geographically tight itinerary: aim for no more than one major outing, one meal destination and one evening commitment each day.
Where should I stay for my first trip to Lagos?
Base yourself in Victoria Island and Oniru, Ikoyi, or Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate. Victoria Island is the most practical all-round choice; choose Ikoyi for a quieter, more polished stay, or Lekki Phase 1 if galleries, beach clubs and late nights are your priority.
Should I combine Lagos with Badagry, Epe or Ibeju-Lekki?
Make Badagry a full, early-start guided day trip for its slave-trade heritage sites. Pair Epe with an overnight in Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki; the far eastern beach and lagoon corridor is too far for a relaxed day trip from Victoria Island or the airport.
Do I need a visa to visit Lagos, Nigeria?
Most non-ECOWAS passport holders need a Nigerian visa or a pre-approved visa-on-arrival/eVisa arrangement before travel. ECOWAS citizens are generally visa-exempt for short visits, but all travelers should confirm current requirements and airport procedures with Nigerian Immigration or their nearest Nigerian mission before booking.
How should I get around Lagos?
Use Uber or Bolt for ordinary trips, and arrange a trusted driver for Badagry, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki or multi-stop days. Keep plans within one area where possible: Island–Mainland and Lekki–Epe transfers can take far longer than map distances suggest, especially at rush hour.
When is the best time to visit Lagos State?
December to February is easiest for first-timers, with relatively dry weather, stronger beach odds and the biggest nightlife and concert season. Late October to November is a better-value compromise; avoid relying on tightly timed coastal or long road itineraries during the wetter May–July and September–mid-October periods.
What should I book ahead in Lagos?
Reserve accommodation, drivers, beach clubs and major concert or club tickets well ahead for December, especially from Christmas through New Year. Also book headlining Afrobeats shows, Eko Convention Centre events, Victoria Island/Lekki productions, and confirmed late-year theatre or arts events as soon as dates are announced.
