Visas & entry
Morocco grants visa-free stays of up to 90 days to citizens of many countries, including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; other nationalities need a visa or may qualify for an eVisa. Rules and passport-validity requirements change, so confirm with Morocco’s embassy or official eVisa portal before booking.
Getting in
- Marrakech Menara Airport: The main gateway and the obvious arrival point for nearly every first trip. It is the best-connected airport for Marrakech, the Atlas, Agafay and onward coaches or private transfers to Essaouira.
- Essaouira-Mogador Airport: Useful only when its limited international or domestic routes match your dates. It is close to Essaouira but is not a reliable substitute for Marrakech Airport; most visitors still fly into or out of RAK.
- Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca: The sensible fallback for long-haul schedules with better fares or connections. Trains link Casablanca to Marrakech, but expect a substantial onward journey rather than treating Casablanca as a local gateway.
- Agadir Al Massira Airport: A workable alternative for the southern Atlantic coast, especially if you are ending around Essaouira or Sidi Kaouki, but it requires a road transfer; it is not convenient for a Marrakech-first itinerary.
Getting around
Use Marrakech and Essaouira as the main bases; add Imlil only for an actual mountain overnight. Trains are useful only on the Casablanca–Marrakech axis: there is no rail to Essaouira, Safi or the Atlas. CTM/Supratours-style coaches make Marrakech–Essaouira (about three hours) and Essaouira–Safi (about 2¼ hours) straightforward, but a rental car, driver or arranged transfer is far better for Imlil, Ourika, Amizmiz, Sidi Kaouki and small coastal or mountain stops. A single Marrakech base does not make Essaouira a casual day trip.
Money
The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD or DH). Cards work at better riads, restaurants and larger shops in Marrakech and Essaouira, but carry cash for taxis, markets, mountain villages, small cafés and tips; ATMs are plentiful in the main towns. Tip modestly but routinely for table service, porters, guides and drivers when service is useful.
Daily budget · MAD (Moroccan dirham; also written DH)
- Value
- MAD 450–850 per day
- Mid-range
- MAD 1,000–1,900 per day
- High-end
- MAD 3,500–8,000+ per day
- Per person, per day, excluding international flights; assumes two people sharing a room and includes lodging, food, ordinary local transport and modest entry fees.
- Value works with hostels or simple riads, local cafés, market meals and buses/shared taxis. In Marrakech, skip rooftop-view premiums and packaged day tours.
- The realistic sweet spot is MAD 1,000–1,900: a good riad or small hotel, proper restaurant meals, taxis, entries, and a paid activity every day or two.
- At the top end, Marrakech is the cost escalator: palace hotels, premium Agafay camps, wine, spas, private guides and drivers can push spending well beyond MAD 8,000.
- Accommodation is the main variable. Expect spikes for good Marrakech riads, Essaouira festival weekends and design-led Agafay camps.
- Big add-ons are guided Atlas/Toubkal trips, private mountain or coast transfers, and surf or kitesurf lessons. Major shopping and alcohol-heavy dining are not covered by these bands.
Eating well
- Do Jemaa el-Fna once, but choose busy stalls with fast turnover and a short, specific menu; do not make it every dinner.
- Breakfast early, take the main meal between roughly 1pm and 3pm, and expect dinner from about 7:30pm onward—later in Marrakech and during Ramadan.
- Reserve one or two days ahead for fashionable Marrakech restaurants, hotel restaurants, serious riad dinners and Essaouira festival-weekend dining. Ordinary tagines, fish grills and lunch cafés rarely need reservations.
- Friday couscous can sell out at smaller places; book or arrive early if it matters.
- During Ramadan, daytime rhythms shift and sunset iftar crowds compress dinner demand; reserve evening tables.
- On the coast, buy argan oil selectively rather than automatically at every tour-stop cooperative; quality varies widely. In Safi, ask whether ceramics are food-safe before using them for cooking or acidic foods.
Book before you land
Jardin Majorelle and Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech timed-entry tickets · Guided Jebel Toubkal trek and mountain-refuge bed, particularly spring through autumn
- Choose a Marrakech riad that a taxi can reach or that will meet you with luggage; a beautiful medina address can still mean a long drag through alleys.
- In summer, insist on genuine air-conditioning in Marrakech. A plunge pool, fan or thick riad walls are not reliable substitutes during heatwaves.
- For Toubkal, use a licensed guide and treat it as a proper two- or three-day mountain trip, not a Marrakech excursion. Altitude, snow/ice in winter and weather can change the plan.
- Essaouira’s wind is a feature, not a flaw: mornings are generally the better window for surfing or beach time, while May–August can be too windy for conventional sunbathing.
- During Ramadan, the region remains visitable, but daytime café rhythm and opening hours shift; reserve dinner around sunset, when restaurants become busy. Friday is couscous day, so book better restaurants and expect some small businesses to operate differently.
- Agree taxi fares before getting in when no meter is used, especially for short Marrakech rides and transfers beyond town. For rural routes, confirm whether the quoted price is per vehicle or per person.
Entry rules change — verify visa requirements for your passport before booking this region.
Season by season
December–February
Marrakech has pleasant days around 19–21°C but cold nights, while the High Atlas can be snowy and icy at altitude and Essaouira is cool, windy and occasionally wet.

Choose heated accommodation carefully, especially in riads; Toubkal is a winter-mountaineering objective, not a casual trek, and Christmas/New Year pushes up demand and room rates.
March–May
Marrakech warms into the low-to-high 20s°C, Atlas valleys are at their greenest and most comfortable for walking, and Essaouira stays temperate but becomes progressively windier.

Easter and spring school holidays inflate rates in Marrakech and Essaouira, while occasional hot, dusty chergui winds can abruptly make inland days uncomfortable.
June–August
Marrakech commonly reaches average highs of roughly 34–38°C, whereas Essaouira stays near 21–23°C with strong, reliable Atlantic wind and almost no rain.

Avoid treating Marrakech as an all-day walking city in this period; book proven air-conditioning, and expect the wind to spoil conventional beach lounging in Essaouira.
September–November
September remains hot in Marrakech, but October brings comfortable city weather and excellent Atlas trekking conditions; Essaouira is mild, with its warmest sea in early autumn, before cooler evenings and rain return in November.

September is still too hot for many Marrakech itineraries, while November has cooler nights and a rising chance of Atlantic rain, though crowds and prices usually ease outside holidays.
Events worth planning around
Gnaoua and World Music Festival · Usually late June; confirm dates when the festival announces each edition. · Essaouira
This is the coast's biggest annual distortion: central accommodation can sell out far ahead, prices rise, and traffic and noise increase. Go for the music and atmosphere; avoid the dates if you want a quiet Essaouira break.
Ramadan · Moves roughly 10–11 days earlier each Gregorian year. · Across Marrakesh-Safi
The region remains open, but daytime café and restaurant rhythms, opening hours and transport patterns can shift. Sunset iftar becomes the social focal point, and evening tables should be reserved.
What to eat
Eat the region as a contrast between Marrakech’s slow-cooked, meat-forward market food and the Atlantic’s sardines, grilled fish and argan products. Use Jemaa el-Fna once for the spectacle, then favor busy, focused local places; on the coast, order what came off the boats rather than defaulting to generic tagine.

Safi: Grilled sardines · Sardine balls · Simple fish served with bread
