Genoa
Base · 3 days
Liguria’s essential city: a dense tangle of medieval lanes, Rolli palaces, serious food and a working harbor. Give it real time rather than using it as a station stop.
Camogli, Recco and San Fruttuoso
Base · 2 days
The best antidote to Portofino overload: Camogli feels like a real fishing town, Recco is for hot cheese focaccia, and San Fruttuoso is a rewarding boat or hike destination. Use it for a slower day on the Portofino promontory.
Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure
Base · 2 days
Portofino is worth seeing for the harbor and promontory views, but Santa Margherita is the sensible place to sleep, eat and catch trains. Visit Portofino early or late; midday is mostly crowd management.
Sestri Levante and the Tigullio Coast
Base · 2–3 days
Sestri Levante’s two-bay setting, beaches and reliable rail links make it one of eastern Liguria’s most workable bases. It is less theatrical than Cinque Terre and much easier to live in for several nights.
Cinque Terre
Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore deliver the region’s defining terraced cliff scenery. Stay at least two nights, use trains, and avoid trying to tick off all five villages in one crowded day.
Levanto and Bonassola
Base · 3 days
The practical northern gateway to Cinque Terre, with a real beach, easier parking and more breathing room after day-trippers leave. Choose it over sleeping in a famous village if value and logistics matter.
La Spezia, Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets
Base · 4 days
La Spezia is the useful rail base; Portovenere is where the scenery becomes memorable, with its colored harbor and clifftop San Pietro Church. Give Portovenere its own day rather than squeezing it around Cinque Terre.
Finale Ligure, Finalborgo, Noli and Varigotti
Base · 3 days
Western Liguria at its most active and varied: beach coves, a strong medieval center in Finalborgo, and limestone terrain for climbing and mountain biking. It works best with a car once you leave the coast.
Alassio and Albenga
Pair Alassio’s broad sandy beach and classic resort atmosphere with Albenga’s medieval towers and agricultural food scene. It is a better fit for a relaxed beach break than for dramatic hiking.
Imperia, Oneglia and the Olive Valleys
Base · 3 days
Come for Taggiasca olive country, oil mills and a quieter western-Ligurian rhythm rather than headline sights. This is slow-travel territory and is far more rewarding with a car.
Sanremo, Bordighera and Ventimiglia
Liguria’s far west feels more urban, palm-lined and French-facing than the Cinque Terre coast. It is a strong extension for gardens, markets and onward rail travel to the Côte d’Azur.
Genoa and the Portofino promontory
5 daysGenoa (3 days) → Camogli, Recco and San Fruttuoso (2 days)
The right short Liguria trip: give Genoa enough time for its old city and food, then slow down on the coast. Use Camogli as the base, eat focaccia in Recco, and visit San Fruttuoso by boat or on foot if conditions cooperate. Do not cram Cinque Terre into this itinerary.
Plan this routeClassic first Liguria
8 daysGenoa (3 days) → Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure (2 days) → Levanto and Bonassola (3 days)
A well-paced first visit with three distinct experiences: Genoa’s urban heft, the Portofino coast, then Cinque Terre from a sane base. Sleep in Santa Margherita rather than Portofino, and use Levanto for two Cinque Terre days plus a less frantic evening.
Plan this routeEastern Liguria by train
10 daysGenoa (3 days) → Sestri Levante and the Tigullio Coast (3 days) → La Spezia, Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets (4 days)
For travelers who want depth without a car or relentless hotel changes. Sestri Levante handles Camogli and Portofino-side outings well; La Spezia is the practical base for Cinque Terre and deserves a separate Portovenere day rather than treating it as an afterthought.

14 daysGenoa (3 days) → Finale Ligure, Finalborgo, Noli and Varigotti (3 days) → Imperia, Oneglia and the Olive Valleys (3 days) → Sestri Levante and the Tigullio Coast (2 days) → Levanto and Bonassola (3 days)
Only choose this if you genuinely want both sides of Liguria. It pairs Finale’s riding, climbing and coves with the olive-country west, then returns east for Tigullio and Cinque Terre. A short car rental is worthwhile for the Finale–Imperia section; return it before the eastern coast.
