Havana is Cuba’s compact city-province: a port capital where the polished colonial core, crumbling apartment blocks, political monuments, sea wall and late-night music scene all sit in the same stubbornly lived-in city. Come for more than vintage cars and mojitos: this is the country’s cultural and political engine, rewarding travelers who can tolerate broken pavements, queues, erratic service and power cuts rather than demanding a frictionless city break.
The mental map
Treat the city as an east-to-west strip along the coast. East is Habana Vieja, the harbor and fortifications; Centro Habana and Vedado are the dense, lived-in and nightlife-oriented middle; Miramar and Playa are quieter and more residential to the west. Across the harbor are Regla and Guanabacoa; proper city beaches lie east at Playas del Este.
When to go
The practical dry season is November–April; late November to March is the best overall window for walking, though it brings the strongest demand for rooms, drivers and good restaurants. May–October is hotter, humid and stormier, with September–October the wettest months and the worst period for hurricane-related disruption; cyclone season officially runs June 1–November 30. April, May and November are reasonable compromises. January jazz events, December’s film festival, autumn ballet programming and summer Carnival can make the city more exciting but tighten accommodation, taxis and performance availability.
Pacing a visit
Use Havana as one base, not a road-trip region. Three full days covers Habana Vieja, Centro and Vedado; add a fourth for Morro–Cabaña or Playas del Este, and stay five to six nights for Miramar, Regla/Guanabacoa and a less rushed food-and-music itinerary. Distances are short, but fuel shortages, blackouts, traffic and unreliable transport make transfer times elastic.
Don't miss
1
Old Town Square
Plaza Vieja is one of the essential stops in Habana Vieja, with restored merchant houses, cafés and a good sense of the old city’s layered architecture. Treat it as one node in a slow walking circuit, not a place to linger all day.
2
Plaza de la Catedral
This irregular, stone-paved square is the most atmospheric of Havana’s principal colonial plazas and the best setting for seeing the cathedral façade. Come early or after dark for the square itself; daytime is best spent continuing through the surrounding Old Havana lanes.
3
Castle of the Three Kings of Morro
El Morro is the signature harbor-mouth fortress, valued as much for its broad Havana skyline views as for its military architecture. Cross the bay for it when visibility is good, then combine it with La Cabaña rather than making two separate trips.
4
National Capitol of Cuba
The Capitolio is one of Havana’s defining buildings, a monumental early-20th-century landmark restored to a level that makes an interior visit worthwhile. See the exterior from Parque Central, then take an interior visit if available rather than merely photographing the dome.
5
Fort Of San Carlos Of The Cabin
La Cabaña is the larger and more immersive of Havana’s harbor fortifications, with substantial ramparts, museums and commanding views back to the old city. Its nightly cannon ceremony is touristy but still a memorable way to experience the harbor after dark.
6
El Malecón
Havana’s seawall is the city’s great public living room and the best place to understand its relationship with the sea, weather and everyday social life. Walk a section at sunset—Prado toward Vedado is the classic route—rather than attempting its full length in the heat.
Where to go
Habana Vieja / Old Havana
The indispensable colonial core: the major plazas, churches, arcades and harbor streets that make Havana immediately legible. It is touristy in patches, but skipping it would be perverse.

Centro Habana
Dense, worn and noisy in the productive sense: balconies, queues, street life, Chinatown and Callejón de Hamel. Come here for the city beyond the restored heritage-zone version of Havana.

Vedado
Havana's most useful all-round base, with the Malecón, Hotel Nacional, restaurants and music venues within reach. It has more room to breathe than the old center, though you will taxi to colonial Havana.

Morro–Cabaña, Casablanca and the East Harbor
Cross the bay for the Morro and Cabaña fortresses, then stay for Havana's best skyline view. This is where the scale and strategic logic of the old port finally make sense.

Plaza de la Revolución and Nuevo Vedado
A monumental dose of post-1959 Havana: vast civic space, state architecture and the Che and Camilo facades. Treat it as a sharp, worthwhile stop paired with Vedado, not an all-day destination.

Miramar, Playa and Jaimanitas
The spacious western side of Havana—mansions, embassies, 5th Avenue, serious restaurants and Fusterlandia in Jaimanitas. Choose it for calm and space, not for easy access to Old Havana.

Regla and Guanabacoa
These harbor-side and inland communities offer a more grounded route into Afro-Cuban religious and musical traditions. Go with a knowledgeable guide and curiosity, not a checklist mentality.

Playas del Este: Cojímar, Santa María del Mar and Guanabo
Havana's practical beach escape: Santa María for a straight beach day, Guanabo for a more local beach-town feel, and Cojímar as a quick coastal stop. It is a useful add-on, not a substitute for a proper resort beach.
