Hotel Strategy
First visit? Stay in Le Marais.
It gives a first-time visitor the strongest balance of central walking access, genuine historic fabric, dining, evening life and multiple Métro options. It is expensive and crowded, but it wastes less sightseeing time than a peripheral bargain hotel and feels more lived-in than the monument-only core.
Avoid sleeping near Immediate Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est station blocks, Champs-Élysées itself, Place du Tertre and the Sacré-Cœur approach in Montmartre, The busiest Bastille and Oberkampf bar streets, Outer-banlieue bargain hotels without a direct, reliable rail link. Convenient for an early train, but busy, noisy and uneven late at night; the surrounding 10th/18th-edge streets are not the relaxed canal experience many listings imply.
